Insect: Definition
The 1989 World Book Dictionary definition of an Insect is:
1. any one of a group of small animals without a backbone and with the body divided into three parts (head, thorax. and abdomen). Insects have three pairs of legs, and usually two pairs of wings. Flies, mosquitoes, grasshoppers, gnats, bees, butterflies, and beetles are insects. Insects belong to the arthropods.
2. any similar small animal with its body divided into several parts, and with several pairs of legs, especially any one of the wingless forms having four pairs of legs. Spiders, centipedes, mites, and ticks are often called insects.
3. Figurative. an insignificant or despicable person
